Keeping it traditional, this Onam
When it comes to traditions and festivals, I either go all-out or stay aloof. I know it sounds a little weird, but I am really not into doing things half way. When it is Onam, it gets difficult to stay away, doesnβt it? From colorful Pookalams to delicious Sadya, there is just so much to look forward to and be a part of. What I love the most about Onam though is wearing my favourite Kasavu Sari. A few days ago, Pramod and I were in Trichur and it was a joy to see young boys and girls off to Onam celebrations in schools and colleges draped in traditional finery. For me, the six yards of off-white with the golden border is the epitome of tradition and elegance and brings out the beauty and grace of a Malayali like none other.
On todayβs post, Rosh and I are going traditional and sharing ShimmerMeβs top tips to look gorgeous this Onam.
Saree
For Onam, Malayali women usually choose between a Kasavu Set-Mundu or Kasavu Saree. Our choice is often the Saree. It is a classic piece which should be in every Malayaliβs wardrobe. And there is just so much that you can do about the blouse that the same saree can look very different and new every Onam. For the post today, we have stuck to the original combination, but brocades in hot pink and bottle green are a few other ShimmerMe favorites.
Makeup
If there is one thing that I find quintessential for traditional Malayali Makeup, it is Kohl lined eyes. Traditionally women would line their upper and lower lash lines thick with Kohl which brings strength to the eyes and opens it up. Also, itβs important to add in other traditional elements that complement the makeup. And thatβs wear a βBindiβ, called a βPottuβ in Kerala could be appropriately used.
Jewellery
Onam is the perfect day to flaunt your traditional Malayali jewellery. From Kasu mala to Manga mala to Kembu and Pearl jhumkas, there is quite the choice. So on this special day, get your favourite pieces out. Jewellery is also an element of the Onam look that we can experiment with. The Kerala Saree is quite versatile that almost all kinds of traditional Indian jewellery goes well with it.
Hair
Not a day to let your hair down, literally. Put your hair in a bun, there are so many ways that you can do it. You can do a side-part, a raised back comb, a messy low bun and may be even a braid. Onam hairdo is incomplete without a string or two of jasmine, so make sure that you have the flowers on.
This is also a perfect look for Malayali brides to sport for a traditional wedding. Pleat it up, layer up more jewelry and voila, we have a traditional Malayali bride. Itβs a classic look that stands the test of time and one that you will never regret.
Makeup: Done by me. Focus as mentioned was on the eyes and making sure that the makeup lasts.
Hair: Panna Poornima, a good friend of ours happily agreed to do our hair for the shoot. She is a Hair & Makeup artist herself and we are absolutely in love with our hair-dos. Thanks Panna :-)
Hope you are all getting ready to fill your tummies with some yummy Sadya and spend some good family time. Here is wishing you all and your families a very Happy & Prosperous Onam!
