Let's play it KOHL!

Let's play it KOHL!

If there is one cosmetic that I most associate Indian Makeup with, it is Kohl. Kohl has evolved so much over the years from its traditional tricky pot and applicator kind to handy pencils and liquid liners. It’s no surprise why Kohl is still such a hit with Indian women as there is possibly no other cosmetic that has the power to add such depth and intensity to the eyes. Kohl pencil has always been my choice to easily add that additional bit of tradition while wearing Indian outfits. It’s amazing how much you can play around with it. Line just the lower water line to create a subtle every day look. Line just the upper lash line to make your eyes look bigger. Line the outer corners of upper and lower lash lines leaving the inner corners unlined to get a softer look. Or, go all the way out and line upper and lower lash lines and waterlines to achieve a more bold and dramatic look like the one I am sporting. Simply use a smudger with Kohl pencil and you have a smoky eye. All with just one pencil.

Here is how to get that oomph with just a Kohl pencil.

  1. Start with an eye shadow primer on the eyelids. Kohl pencils have a tendency to smudge and crease. Using a primer will ensure that it stays put. So this step is very important. I am using Urban Decay's original primer.
  2. Line top & bottom lash lines. I have extended the line on the upper lash line a little beyond the outer corner and joined it with the line on the lower lash line to create a wing.
  3. Tightline top and bottom lash lines. This step is crucial so as to conceal any gaps between your lashes and make your lashes appear thicker and fuller.
  4. Finish off with lots of Mascara.

Kohl pencils are no longer just black but come in dreamy hues of turquoise, emerald and deep blue. They work well when complimented with eyeshadows of the same hue. A few of my favorites are from MacMakeupForever and Bobbi Brown . You can line your lashes thin or go as thick as you want. I'd suggest that you try out variations and figure what suits your eyes the best. To make your kohl last longer, set it with black matte eye shadow. I like a bit of smudging which happens through the day resulting in a natural look.

So go on, play with Kohl and discover your signature look :-)
